For nearly a century, this site served as the experimental grounds for the Royal Botanic Society, housing exotic glasshouses and a museum where only society members and their guests could wander. It was not until the society's lease dissolved in nineteen thirty-two that these gates were thrown open, transforming what had been a private botanical laboratory into the public landscape you see today.
