Home House

Home House stands at twenty Portman Square as a surviving monument to the hedonistic spirit of the eighteenth century. It was commissioned in seventeen seventy-three by Elizabeth, the Dowager Countess of Home, a wealthy heiress who earned the local nickname Queen of Hell for her scandalous reputation and relentless pursuit of pleasure. She envisioned this building not as a family home, but as a dedicated pavilion for lavish social entertainment. While James Wyatt began the initial design work, the Countess eventually dismissed him to bring in the celebrated architect Robert Adam. Adam transformed the interior into one of the most sophisticated examples of neoclassical design in London, creating a backdrop designed specifically to host her wild and legendary parties.
