Statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Grosvenor Square

The statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the center of this square is a monument built by the people of Britain to honor a wartime ally. Shortly after his death in 1945, thousands of ordinary citizens contributed small donations to a memorial fund set up by the British Parliament. This public outpouring paid for the bronze figure sculpted by Sir William Reid Dick, which was unveiled on April 12, 1948. Eleanor Roosevelt traveled to London to preside over the ceremony, standing alongside King George VI and Winston Churchill to honor the president who led the United States through the Second World War.
