Chester Square

Chester Square stands on ground that was once a series of marshy fields known as the Five Fields. In the early nineteenth century, the developer Thomas Cubitt transformed this soggy landscape into a fashionable residential district by hauling in vast amounts of earth excavated from the construction of the Saint Katharine Docks to raise the level of the ground. This massive feat of civil engineering allowed for the creation of the elegant, white-stuccoed terraces you see today.
