London Oratory

The London Oratory is a striking monument of Italian Baroque architecture that stands out sharply against the traditional British landscape. Its designer, Herbert Gribble, was only twenty-eight years old when he won the competition to build the church in the late nineteenth century. He deliberately chose an exuberant Italian style to transport visitors to Rome, creating a space that feels entirely disconnected from the city outside. The interior is filled with intricate marble work, gold leaf, and vibrant mosaics that serve to overwhelm the senses in the same manner as the great churches of the Italian Renaissance.
