Science Museum

The Science Museum has roots in the Great Exhibition of 1851, a massive event held in Hyde Park to showcase global industrial and scientific achievement. Prince Albert, the event's patron, suggested that the project's financial surplus should be used to create permanent educational institutions on this land. The very first building erected here in 1857 was an iron-framed structure covered in corrugated iron sheets. Its appearance was so utilitarian and industrial that it was quickly nicknamed the Brompton Boilers by the public.
