Ismaili Centre

The Ismaili Centre stands on Cromwell Road as the first religious and cultural building specially designed and built for the Ismaili Muslim community in the Western world. Opened in nineteen eighty-five by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the building was specifically crafted to bridge the architectural gap between Eastern traditions and the Victorian surroundings of South Kensington. You will notice its facade is relatively understated, using light-colored stone that allows it to sit comfortably alongside the grand, historic institutions nearby without overwhelming them. The architects even chamfered the building’s edges to ensure it would not block natural daylight from reaching the neighboring homes, a thoughtful detail that highlights its integration into the local streetscape.
