Wellington Monument, London

monument

The Wellington Monument you are approaching is officially known as the Achilles Statue. It stands eighteen feet tall and is composed entirely of bronze salvaged from French cannons captured during the Napoleonic Wars. When the statue was transported to its current site in 1822, it was so massive that it could not fit through the existing park gates. Workers had to tear down a section of the nearby wall just to maneuver it into place.
