Tothill Fields Bridewell

Tothill Fields Bridewell began in sixteen eighteen as a house of correction meant to put the unemployed and idle poor to work. Its name comes from the Bridewell Palace in the City of London, a former royal residence that had been converted into a famous prison for similar purposes. By the eighteenth century, it had shifted its focus, transitioning from a place for vagrants into a full-scale criminal prison.
