Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park

The stone gateway at Woodlawn Memorial Park marks the entrance to a landscape designed to mimic a rolling English garden. In the early twentieth century, San Francisco moved its cemeteries out of the city, and Woodlawn became a primary destination for the displaced. Its founder, Lawrence Eagan, filled the grounds with massive redwood trees and sculpted hills to shed the bleakness of traditional graveyards. Among the thousands resting here is Wyatt Earp, whose ashes were brought to his wife’s family plot in nineteen twenty-nine.
