Broderick Terry Duel Landmark Park

The Broderick-Terry Duel site is marked by a modest stone monument nestled against the hillside of Westlake. Here, on September thirteen, eighteen fifty-nine, David Broderick, a United States Senator, and David Terry, a former Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, met with pistols to settle a political grudge. The duel ended with Broderick mortally wounded, dying three days later. His death fueled anti-slavery sentiment across California, turning a private quarrel into a defining moment for the state's shifting political loyalties.
