The Shoreline Amphitheatre features a pair of massive, swooping white tensioned peaks that rise sharply above the flat marshes of Mountain View. Bill Graham, the legendary concert promoter, commissioned this structure in nineteen eighty-six specifically to host the Grateful Dead. The land itself is a reclaimed landfill that still vents methane gas, requiring the construction team to hover the entire massive stage and seating bowl on a complex system of pilings to keep the foundation from sinking into the former garbage heap.
