Mason Street Schoolhouse

The Mason Street Schoolhouse stands out as a small, simple wood-frame structure with a steep gabled roof and a bell perched on top. It served as San Diego's first public school building, opening in eighteen sixty-five. For years, students learned their lessons on wooden benches until the building eventually moved to make way for new construction. It later returned to Old Town, where it now sits restored to its original state, complete with the inkwells and iron-legged desks of the nineteenth century.
