Whaley House Museum

The Whaley House stands out for its Greek Revival architecture, characterized by its wide, wrap-around verandas and two-story stature in a neighborhood dominated by single-story adobes. Thomas Whaley built this home in eighteen fifty-seven using bricks fired in his own kiln. He intended it as a residence, but it soon functioned as the county courthouse, a theater, and a general store. Whaley spent years in legal battles over the building's ownership, eventually losing the courthouse contract to a rival town developer.
