SS Jeremiah O'Brien

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is the last remaining ship from the massive fleet that stormed Normandy on D-Day in 1944 that remains in its original, operational condition. While over 2,700 Liberty ships were built during the frantic pace of World War Two to sustain the Allied war effort, this vessel stands as the only one of its kind to maintain its authentic, wartime configuration. After the war, she spent thirty-three years sitting in a mothball fleet in Suisun Bay, saved from the scrap heap only through the dedicated efforts of a group of enthusiasts who recognized her unique historical value. In a feat of engineering and determination, she became the only ship in that reserve fleet to steam away under her own power in 1979, beginning her new life as a floating museum right here in San Francisco.
