Washington Square

Before this land became a public park, it served as a farm for a prominent local figure. In the early nineteenth century, the Mexican rancher Juana Briones tended to her cattle and potato crops on this very ground. It was not until the city surveyor Jasper O Farrell mapped the streets of San Francisco in eighteen forty-seven that this site was officially designated as a city square.
