Great Star Theater

The Great Star Theater at six hundred thirty-six Jackson Street stands as the last remaining Chinese theater in any Chinatown across the United States. Originally opened in nineteen twenty-five as the Great China Theater, it served as a primary cultural anchor for the neighborhood long before television or the internet existed. During its early decades, audiences would gather here for Cantonese opera performances that could stretch for five hours, treating the venue as a living room where they chatted, snacked, and caught up on community news.
