The Tenderloin Museum occupies the ground floor of the Cadillac Hotel, a building that represents the neighborhood's unique architectural legacy. This structure is a cornerstone of the world's largest collection of historic single room occupancy hotels, which were built in the period following the Great Earthquake and Fire of nineteen-oh-six. The museum design uses dark, ornate wallpaper to evoke the atmosphere of a speakeasy or a Prohibition-era bar, reflecting the area's long history as a center for underground culture and nightlife. Unlike traditional museums focused on artifacts behind glass, this space serves as a community archive that celebrates the residents who have defined the district for over a century.
