Asian Art Museum

The Asian Art Museum occupies a building that served as the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library for decades. Completed in 1917, the structure is a notable example of Beaux-Arts architecture designed by George Kelham to complement the nearby City Hall. When the museum relocated here in 2003, Italian architect Gae Aulenti transformed the interior, removing interior walls to create open, light-filled gallery spaces that departed from the traditional library layout.
