Union Square

Before Union Square became a global destination for luxury shopping and city events, it was an inhospitable stretch of wind-swept sand dunes. In the eighteen fifties, the site contained a massive sand hill that local residents used for everything from dumping refuse to staging impromptu baseball games. This rugged terrain was eventually leveled by steam shovels, with the excess soil repurposed as landfill for the growing city.
