You are approaching a historic culinary institution that began in a herring barrel. In the early twentieth century, Joel Russ, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, peddled salted herring and dried mushrooms from a pushcart on the streets of the Lower East Side. He eventually saved enough to open a small storefront on Orchard Street in nineteen fourteen, later moving to this location on East Houston Street in nineteen twenty.
