Adath Jeshurun of Jassy Synagogue

You are looking at a building that stands as a remnant of the massive wave of immigration that defined the Lower East Side at the turn of the twentieth century. Built in nineteen hundred and four, it was originally the home of the Adath Jeshurun of Jassy congregation, a group of Jewish immigrants who had fled Romania. The architect, Emery Roth, later became famous for designing some of the most luxurious apartment buildings in New York City, but this early project shows his versatility. He chose the Moorish Revival style, a popular architectural choice for synagogues at the time, featuring arched windows, striped brickwork, and bold, ornamental details that stood out against the dense tenement housing of the neighborhood.
