Grand Theatre (Manhattan)

The Grand Theatre, which once stood on the corner of Grand and Chrystie Streets, holds the distinction of being the first playhouse in the United States built specifically for Yiddish language productions. When it opened in February 1903, the local community celebrated it as a symbol of cultural achievement, decorating the building with American flags alongside banners bearing the Star of David. Its construction marked a shift toward a more modern and professionalized era of Yiddish drama, moving away from the cruder, improvisational styles that had previously dominated the Bowery stages.
