Quartier d'Oberkampf

The Oberkampf district centers on a street named for Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, a Bavarian entrepreneur who opened a factory here in seventeen sixty. He manufactured printed cotton fabrics, known as toiles de Jouy, that became fashionable across Europe. His workers flooded into the area, transforming a rural landscape into a dense industrial hub. While the machines stopped long ago, the legacy of that workforce remains in the neighborhood’s tightly packed buildings, narrow passages, and the persistent, restless energy of its crowded street life.
