Fontaine du Palmier

landmark

The Fontaine du Palmier features a tall bronze column crowned by a statue of Victory, resting on a pedestal surrounded by sphinxes that spout water. Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned this monument in eighteen oh six to celebrate his military victories in Egypt and across Europe. While the surrounding Place du Châtelet has been completely overhauled since, the fountain remains, marking the spot where the old theater of the same name once stood before it was demolished to make way for urban traffic.
