The Fontaine Louvois features four seated stone figures representing the great rivers of France: the Seine, the Garonne, the Loire, and the Saône. Commissioned by King Louis Philippe, the fountain was designed by architect Louis Visconti and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Klagmann to provide fresh water to the city. During the Second Republic, the sculptor narrowly avoided having his work destroyed because the statues were considered too royalist in their styling. They survived, and the fountain remains a quiet centerpiece of the square.
