Place des Victoires

The Place des Victoires is a perfect circle defined by high, cream-colored limestone facades that wrap the entire space. It serves as a private real estate venture commissioned by the Maréchal de La Feuillade in the sixteen eighties to flatter King Louis the Fourteenth. The central bronze statue of the King on horseback replaced an earlier, less grandiose version that the revolutionaries melted down for cannons. The current equestrian monument arrived in eighteen twenty-two, showing the King wearing a Roman toga and a laurel wreath.
