Théâtre de la Ville

The Theatre de la Ville features a stark, flat stone facade punctuated by a series of tall, rectangular windows that align perfectly with the height of the arches across the street at the Hotel de Ville. Baron Haussmann commissioned this structure in the eighteen sixties to balance the architecture of the plaza. Its most famous tenant, Sarah Bernhardt, took over the house in eighteen ninety-nine. She lived in a small apartment behind the stage and performed here until her death in nineteen twenty-three.
