The Place Saint-Michel is anchored by a bronze fountain featuring Saint Michael the Archangel subduing a dragon. Gabriel Davioud designed this structure in eighteen sixty, when Baron Haussmann cleared the cramped medieval streets to open up the Left Bank. During the Paris Liberation in August nineteen forty-four, the surrounding plaza became a flashpoint for resistance fighters. You can still spot small, pockmarked scars on the stone masonry near the fountain base, left behind by stray bullets from those final days of fighting.
