The black facade of number five bis Rue de Verneuil is covered in white graffiti, a collection of names, hearts, and messages left by fans over the last three decades. Serge Gainsbourg lived behind this heavy door from nineteen sixty-nine until his death in nineteen ninety-one. He left the interior exactly as it was when he lived there, including the piano, the jukebox, and the clutter of ashtrays. It remains the shrine he inadvertently built for himself through his long, restless residency.
