You are standing at the Porte de Montreuil, a location that once served as a physical gateway in the nineteenth-century Thiers wall, the defensive fortifications that encircled Paris. These walls were built to protect the city, but they also created a hard boundary between the capital and its surrounding suburbs. The gate took its name from the nearby town of Montreuil, as it was the point where the road from the city led directly into that neighboring community.
