Marcel Proust rests here in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, the final destination for one of literature's most profound explorers of memory and time. He spent the last three years of his life confined to a cork-lined bedroom in Paris, where he worked tirelessly to complete his monumental seven-volume novel, In Search of Lost Time. During these final years, he was plagued by severe pulmonary illness, often sleeping throughout the day and writing by night to capture the vast, intricate structure of his recollections. While he died in 1922 before he could finish editing the final parts of his masterpiece, his grave remains a site of pilgrimage for those moved by his intimate understanding of how the past lives within the present.
