Place de Fontenoy

landmark

Place de Fontenoy takes its name from the Battle of Fontenoy, a pivotal military engagement in seventeen forty-five during the War of the Austrian Succession. The square itself was laid out in seventeen seventy to serve as a formal, semi-circular gateway to the nearby École Militaire. Its design was intended to provide a symmetric, geometric transition between the military academy and the wider city, reflecting the rigid planning standards of the eighteenth century.
