The UNESCO headquarters stands on the site of the former Fontenoy military barracks. This location was specifically chosen to sit on a historic axis that connects the landmark Ecole Militaire to the Eiffel Tower across the Seine. When the complex opened in 1958, it served as a deliberate architectural statement of post-war international cooperation, designed by a team of three visionaries from France, Hungary, and Italy. The main secretariat building is famously shaped like a three-pointed star, elevated off the ground on seventy-two concrete pillars.
