The storefront features a forest green facade and bright yellow lettering that matches the small, crowded windows packed with books. George Whitman opened this shop in nineteen fifty-one, naming it in honor of Sylvia Beach’s original bookstore, which served as a home for writers like James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. Whitman invited travelers to sleep on cots tucked between the bookshelves, provided they helped out for a few hours and read a book a day. He called these temporary residents tumbleweeds.
