Church of Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs

The Church of Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs holds a massive, flamboyant Gothic facade that stands out sharply against the narrow medieval streets of the Marais. It grew from a humble chapel for field workers into a sprawling parish church funded by the wealthy inhabitants of this quarter during the sixteenth century. The interior houses a famous organ loft where the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully once played. In seventeen ninety-four, the building briefly served as a Temple of Reason during the French Revolution before returning to its original purpose.
