Rue des Rosiers

Rue des Rosiers curves through the heart of the Marais, marked by a dense cluster of kosher bakeries and falafel shops. During the Middle Ages, rose bushes lined this path, giving the street its name. In the nineteenth century, thousands of Jewish families fleeing Eastern European persecution settled here, turning the street into the center of the Pletzl, or little place. During the Nazi occupation of Paris, German soldiers famously blocked both ends of the street to trap its residents during a raid.
