Georges-Lamarque Square

This small public park, created in 1904, serves as a local sanctuary for children and neighborhood residents. While it appears to be a standard city square, it is dedicated to the memory of Georges Lamarque, a French resistance fighter who led the intelligence network known as Druides-Alliance during the Second World War. Lamarque, known by the alias Petrel, was captured in 1944 after his radio broadcasts were tracked to a village in eastern France. To protect the local villagers from German reprisals, he and two of his colleagues voluntarily surrendered and were executed in a field that same evening. The square stands as a quiet, lasting tribute to his sacrifice at the age of thirty.
