Square Van Vollenhoven is a quiet green space in the twelfth arrondissement that opened in nineteen thirty seven. It takes its name from Joost van Vollenhoven, a Dutch-born figure who became a French citizen and served as a high-ranking colonial administrator in French West Africa before his death in the First World War. The square contains a tiered fountain decorated with intricate mosaics. This fountain serves as a piece of living history, as it was originally constructed for the International Colonial Exhibition held at the nearby Porte Dorée in nineteen thirty one.
