Le Bon Marché stands as the world's first true department store, a retail revolution born in the mid-nineteenth century. Before it existed, shopping meant visiting cramped, specialized shops where prices were never marked and customers were expected to haggle. In eighteen fifty-two, the ambitious merchant Aristide Boucicaut transformed a small haberdashery into this massive, open-concept temple of commerce where every item had a fixed price tag, ending the era of the negotiated deal.
