La Sucrière stands out as a massive concrete monolith punctuated by industrial loading bays along the Saône riverfront. Constructed in nineteen thirty, this building served as a sugar warehouse for decades, storing raw cargo brought by barge into Lyon. During the second world war, dock workers used the dark, cavernous space to hide fugitives and supplies from occupying forces. Today, the structure houses contemporary art galleries and cultural events, keeping the original raw concrete columns and functional heavy steel doors intact.
