People's Publishing House

The People’s Publishing House is distinguished by its understated, narrow storefront tucked into a row of colonnaded shops. Founded in nineteen forty-two, this bookstore grew out of the Communist Party of India’s desire to disseminate radical political literature during the height of the struggle for independence. While the British colonial authorities regularly banned their pamphlets and books as seditious, the shop kept its shelves stocked. It served as a critical nerve center for activists, trade unionists, and writers to exchange banned ideas.
