Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

religious

The Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple glows in bright red and yellow sandstone, topped by tall shikhara towers that climb toward the sky. Built by Baldeo Das Birla in nineteen thirty-eight, the temple broke social barriers when Mahatma Gandhi agreed to inaugurate it. He insisted that the gates remain open to people of all castes, a radical departure for religious spaces at the time. Today, the intricate carvings of Hindu mythology cover the exterior walls, while the central shrines remain a quiet retreat from the city.
