The Torre Aurora rises as a jagged stone wedge perched on the cliff between the old and new parts of Monterosso al Mare. Built in the sixteenth century by the Republic of Genoa, this watchtower defended the village against raids by North African pirates. During the Second World War, German forces occupied the structure and installed a coastal gun nest within its walls. Today, the tower stands in private hands, housing a restaurant terrace that overlooks the crashing waves of the Ligurian Sea.
