The storefront of Tenbelian Spices is marked by wooden drawers stacked floor to ceiling, each filled with hand-ground cumin, sumac, and proprietary blends. When the Tenbelian family arrived in Bourj Hammoud after the Armenian Genocide, they brought their spice recipes from the Anatolian highlands. Haroutiun Tenbelian started the business in nineteen twenty-four by milling dried peppers and mixing them in small wooden barrels. He supplied the neighborhood with flavors that reminded families of the kitchens they had left behind in Cilicia.
