Nanda Pyinnyar Cave

The Nanda Pyinnyar Cave features a heavy, dark entrance carved directly into the limestone hillside outside of Nyaung-U. Local tradition holds that a monk named Nanda Pyinnyar lived inside this man-made hollow during the Bagan era, relying on the quiet isolation to focus his practice. Villagers who brought him food eventually turned the interior into a shrine. It remains a space defined by the weight of the rock above and the singular choice of a monk to withdraw into the earth.
