Thambula Temple

The Thambula Temple sits on the plains of Bagan with a distinctively thick, solid base that tapers into a slender, soaring tower. King Narapatisithu commissioned this temple in the late twelfth century, and his queen, Thambula, oversaw its construction. While many temples in the area were built by kings to secure merit, this structure bears the queen's name alone. Inside, traces of original mural paintings remain on the walls, depicting intricate floral motifs and scenes that have survived for eight hundred years.
