The Jamchen Lhakhang Monastery sits anchored by its bright, multi-tiered pagoda roof and the massive, gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha peering out from its upper balcony. Built by the Chiniya Lama family, who have held the hereditary title of protectors of the nearby Great Stupa for generations, this monastery serves as a private devotional space that became a hub for Tibetan Buddhist practice in Kathmandu. A monk once hid sacred scriptures inside the walls here during a time of regional political instability.
