The Guangdong Guild Hall stands out for its elaborate, curved wooden eaves and intricately carved stone pillars that contrast sharply with the surrounding modern city. Built during the Qing dynasty by merchants from Guangdong, it served as a meeting place, warehouse, and theater for southern traders living in Chengdu. When a massive fire swept through the area in the late nineteenth century, the hall survived almost entirely intact, saved, according to local legend, by the stone carvings of water creatures on its roof.
