The Huqing Yutang Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum occupies a sprawling complex of dark timber buildings marked by intricate wood carvings and massive, soot-stained medicinal cabinets. Hu Xueyan, a legendary nineteenth-century merchant, built this pharmacy in eighteen seventy-four. He once famously paid to have the highest-quality medicinal herbs sourced from across the empire, regardless of the cost. The shop became so reliable that locals claimed a prescription filled here guaranteed a recovery, simply because of the reputation Hu built for his ingredients.
